Culture and digital economy minister Ed Vaizey is today meeting with business owners as the Government steps up its efforts to improve digital security among businesses after a number of high-profile attacks.

The Minister is hosting a round table with SMEs and industry experts from KPMG, Microsoft, Sophos, Symantec and the Office of Cyber Security to help inform efforts to improve business security, particularly among smaller businesses.

Government statistics reveal 60% of small businesses suffered a breach in the past year with the worst attacks costing up to £115,000.

Vaizey said: “Small firms are part of what makes Britain great and many of them benefit from being online.

"However, with this increased openness and connectivity comes increased vulnerability, which is why we are supporting UK small businesses to better protect themselves against cyber-attacks.”

The push is part of the Government’s National Cyber Security Programme, launched in 2010, and the cross- government Cyber Streetwise campaign to raise awareness and encourage behaviour change amongst consumers and businesses.
