Burberry appoints Telefonica's Matthew Key to unlock mobile treasure

16 July 2013

Burberry today recruited the telecom boss who rebranded the Millennium Dome in Greenwich as The O2 and brought the iPhone to Britain.

Matthew Key, who heads all of O2-owner Telefonica’s digital operations, will join the FTSE 100 luxury fashion company as a non-executive director from September.

Key negotiated with Apple’s founder, the late Steve Jobs, when O2 became the first UK mobile operator to sell the iPhone in 2007. “His deep knowledge of digital and mobile, coupled with his extensive experience, will be tremendous assets,” Burberry chairman Sir John Peace said.

Key’s appointment is the latest sign big companies want to recruit talent with mobile experience.
